Manganam, where boundaries blur

Manganam, where boundaries blur
...

"I made it", valiamma proudly said. She used to make models with clay but only this one remained and though small, it adorned a prominent spot in her tidy room.

Manganam, my mom's village used to charm us since childhood. We spent most of our vacations in this serene land. Full of farmland, canals, ponds and all flora and fauna one could imagine as a child, this small village in Kottayam was our dream destination. We always longed to go there, not from sheer love for nature, which the tiny village had in abundance, but for the joy of connecting with cousins and friends.

All my childhood heroes were there. My elder cousins Padman and Praseed were always a step ahead of me, whether it be cycling, playing kutti kol or marbles (we used to call it Goli in Trivandrum, they called it Kachi). Padman chettan was good at painting, sculptures, drums and even Kathakali. I followed him ardently and imitated whatever I could. Alas! I could hardly enjoy Kathakali, though I did sit with him whole night to watch a few. But I could easily emulate his Khadi attire and also subscribe to his ideologies.

The village offered plenty more. Mangoes, relished fresh from tree tops, bathing in the temple pond, sleeping on 'maadam' (cots placed on poles inside a hut in the centre of the farmland, from where Grandpa used to monitor the work going on), the list is endless. But what astonished me then and even now is the 'no boundaries culture' of the village. We were city bred and were used to boundary walls, though in those days we were free to jump over any of them (kids rarely entered houses through gates). But in Manganam there weren't any boundary walls either on ground, or in people's minds.

In our childhood games, there were so many kids from the neighborhood. We could hardly make out whether they were relatives or not. All of us were one gang. The elders probably knew them all. Kids could eat from any house and play wherever they wanted. There simply weren't any boundaries. All houses looked and felt the same. It was indeed a haven for the 'kutti sangams'.

Today Manganam has changed. Most of the wetland has disappeared, more houses have come up, many, similar to the concrete city mansions and the muddy allys have given way to tarred bylanes.
Yet there's one trait which hasn't changed much. Boundary walls are still few, boundary between minds even less.

We gathered for an offering called 'Ada' in the village temple, one of the few in the state with Narasimha as the main diety. Those who hail from Manganam has a special affinity to the Avatar, for them Manganathappan comes first. The temple is a meeting point for the village. All festivities are also common.

Ada is a sweet dish made with rice flour, jaggery and coconut. Few hundreds are made and are taken in a procession to the temple, from where after pooja, it's distributed. The whole village gathers, irrespective of who is offering, and not only takes the Ada but also join the lunch afterwards, special invitation is neither extended nor expected. The village behaves as one family.

We were there for just a day, yet had glimpses of the 'borderless tradition'. A neighbour who was building a new house was using my cousin's garage for his carpentry work, a cow grazing on Valiamma's backyard belonged to their neighbour; small things but indicating that even today boundaries seldom mattered. They are still keen to help each other.

My Valiamma (mom's sister) is past eighty and is attached to few possessions, the clay she modelled as a child, being one of her dearest. Zoom in, the idol this Manganathappan devotee created as a child and treasures even now, is Jesus, indeed replica of the truly borderless culture of her dear village.

Where humanity matters more, boundaries are sure to blur.

Misha, my darling.

Misha, my darling.

She stared at me sheepishly.
I was equally cold. If she doesn't care, neither would I, for my ego is nothing miniscule.

After a long while, I took a day off to spend with my kids. My daughter, the younger of the two, is doing her plus one at St Antony's in Kanjirapally. The majestic school which has one of the best campuses is in the midst of lush greenery, overlooked by the cool mountains. The serene campus would stimulate any child to learn and they indeed have brilliant academic records. Getting an admission is no mean task and my kid was indeed fortunate to gain a seat. Yet, I was sad.

She's cool, candid enough to tell me that my jokes are mean while many pretend to smile. Though proud of her dad, who hopefully is her model, she wouldn't, unlike rest of the family, mince her words. She's fascinated by politics ("your genes", my wife would remark) and as a small kid often gave me company for IMA meetings. Once, still in her primary school, she told me while returning from an executive, "Acha, you speak too much. Not just that, you don't allow others to speak. That's not how you behave in meetings". I knew she was right, but couldn't resist asking, "How do you know, you are just a little girl", to which she replied, "we've far more meetings than you. We've assembly everyday in school". I was clean bowled! Another day at Doctors club she wanted me to wait till the crowd built, to recite the poem which I taught her, while I was persuading her to do it early to avoid stage fright.

I'd always enjoyed her company. Her wits, bickerings and retorts were amusing. She is honest, loving, hardworking and had empathy in abundance which makes her too dear to me. Though I'm hardly around, her being at home gave the comfort that I could see her anytime and cuddle or quarrel at will. She tried hard to get an admission to the school and we also did appreciate. But to see her move away wasn't easy at all.

My wife was a boarder right from her primary classes and wasn't averse to putting her in hostel. I was never a hosteller, and wasn't too amused. Yet, we had little choice. She had to stay away. It wasn't easy at all staying alone, away from family with the added stress of studies too. She was staying away from us for the first time and though she took to it boldly, we could sense the despair.

She loves dogs. My kids grew up with our pet Minnie, a she Labrador who came to us when they were small. They, especially my daughter, was so fond of her. Her little tricks, like fetching the ball and going to cage while ordered, did amuse them a lot. Knowing that my daughter wouldn't be able to absorb her demise, we told her that Minnie was recruited as a Police dog and they took her away. She was initially glad but later sensed from our mood that probably the pet is no more. That's when she demanded a puppy as her birthday gift. She was nine or ten. We brought Leo, another Lab, my sister in Bangalore following suit got Sirius, a Golden retriever. My sis  couldn't manage the dog in her flat and packed him to our house. Since then we've both of them and my daughter was doubly excited. Leo and Sirius were her close companions. She loved them and they loved her too. Perhaps she missed them more than us, when she had to shift out.

Misha came as a boon. She's a Lhasa Apso, owned by the land lady where my kid is staying now. My daughter instantly took to her and little Misha too liked her. She was excited to talk about Misha, when I visited, and to show me how much she's attached. I was so happy, to see her find some company in a world of strangers. Where men often fail to bond, it's amazing to see how these little creatures share unselfish love and can be a real shine in moments of despair. To my daughter, this little dog is a solace, a close companion in an unknown world, a loving friend in a house far away and one more reason to stay in her new home where she anyway has to. Look around, wherever you are, there are gems beckoning.

I glanced at the little dog, when I was leaving, with joy and awe. Her eyes didn't seem sheepish anymore, infact they were sparkling.
For making my little angel a bit more happy, Misha, I should let you know, I adore you. From an unknown little dog, you have become a darling.

Beauty or beast

Beauty or beast
...

Five kilometres isn't much for Zen. Ulloor, the small city suburb was hardly any distance from my clinic. As I started my Zen heading to Ulloor, I'd no inclination whatsoever, on what was about to just happen.

'Ulloor' might bring scary school memories to many. Kunjan Nambiar was my personal favourite. Kumaranasan and Vallathol were reasonable. Ulloor was tough, really tough. Though he's reckoned as one of the best in Malayalam poetry till date, frankly I'm scared of this literary giant. His poems were really hard to crack. My trip to Ulloor however had very little to do with poetry.

I've a friend in Ulloor. Though mostly he's like Kunjan Nambiar, at times he is serious like Vallathol and sometimes scary as Ulloor himself. So unpredictable! Yet he's close and sweet and we decided to travel to Sabarimala together. I meticulously observe fast during the pilgrimage months and visit the shrine every year. My friend has a 'Kunjan attitude' towards fasting, but was a devotee nevertheless and a pleasant company too. I was keenly looking forward towards both the pilgrimage and the trip.

Zen came to us few years back. My friends might frown at the 'few'! But who doesn't know that like age, cars make also isn't usually revealed. I'll put it this way. When Zen came my kids were in kindergarten. Some of you atleast know which class they are in now and thus would have guessed the car's age. So be it! Did I ever claim it's new. Some oldies say it's old. I pardon them for not knowing that 'old is gold'. My friends might have changed atleast three cars during the time, but I stuck with my Zen. Whenever wife protested, I used to clean bowl her with one statement, Hey, I can't think of changing two things in life - Zen and You. I'm not sure whether it made her happy or sad, but she wouldn't argue further.

My son is an automobile freak. He, unlike me, is up to date with all cars - looks and technicalities. My knowledge was limited. To me car is defined as a four wheel structure which helps you travel from point A to point B. My daughter, as a kid used to go furious at my definition. She wondered, how come Appooppa (my dad, who's another car freak) gets to change his car every two years and we are stuck with the same Zen. Yet, we all loved the little Zen. He was part of our family.

How often have we driven to beaches, hills and resorts in our little Zen. Where all has he taken me to. So many crucial meetings, huge turmoils, such a lot of ups and downs. He has never complained, never hesitated to start at the first go, never had a puncture and never have betrayed us on the road. I was sort of getting addicted to my cute little machine. I simply loved my Zen. While I was mocked at many a times, in many friends gatherings for driving an old car, laughed upon when Zen roared while starting at times, I just kept my cool, for I loved my Zen.

I don't think I gave the car anything other than love. I hardly ever serviced it, didn't bother about oil change or replacing spares. I was doing what Hero Honda asked us to do when we were youngsters - "Fill it, shut it, forget it". I just filled petrol and drove around, yet the Zen behaved disciplined like a little school boy. At teens, however he began to be rebellious. He started to resist and roar and I had to be serious in feeding oil and changing spares. Yet he behaved well, though with some coercion. I began to realise that not only did I love him, he loved me too. Still for past few years I wouldn't take him on long drives as before. I would take my dad's latest dude instead and rest Zen for short city trips. Ulloor was indeed very close and was no great deal for Zen.

The plan was to drive to my friend's house, park my car there and then go to Sabarimala in his Verna. 'The car and driver were ready' he told, but the owner didn't seem too keen. He had a flu and got scared by the Okhi warning too. As I was driving to his house he told me over phone that he wasn't coming to the hills and that I could go alone in his car. I had hardly started from my clinic and was just nearing the first junction. It was too much for my vanity. I politely refused and then thought for a split second on how I would go alone. I had already filled the erumudi in the morning and had no choice but to go to Sabarimala. As I reached the junction I'd made my decision - I would drive my Zen to Sabarimala.

"You are your best friend", my wife would often say. Actually I never disagreed. That, I've found is the only way to get my stupidities accepted without arguments. So I headed to the nearest pump, filled petrol, pressed the accelerator, and sped away to the hills - alone! The trip did live upto my expectations. The threat of Okhi winds and rains didn't the least hamper the thrill of long distance drive and liberty of zero conflicts. Though Zen hadn't travelled more than fifty at a stretch in last couple of years, I knew my Zen wouldn't let me down.

It was already late noon when I started and I was speeding through the highways for I wanted to reach the forests before dusk. The traffic wasn't heavy because of the bad weather forecast. Still by the time I reached the foothills it was already pitch dark. I'd no choice but to keep driving. Car stereo refused to give company and I switched on the mobile for some devotional songs. The battery line was soon thinning. My foot steadily kept pressing the accelerator. The darkness was increasing and apart from the car's faint light there was nothing in sight. It was indeed dark and lonely in the thick woods. I didn't think too much, just sang with the phone and kept driving. Soon lights began to appear and I was so relieved to be near the shrine. Against all odds we (me and my Zen) reached Pampa by night. I gave him a friendly pat and lost no time to climb the hill and have darshan the same night. Everything went off blissfully well.

While climbing down I wasn't as wary as the previous night. I was going to drive in day light and that too into the plains. Being alone gave me the luxury to choose any route and even wrong my way. I didn't have to explain. I decided to visit my kids at Kottayam spend the day with them and then drove back home through the highway that night. Zen brought me back without a single hitch. He was as delighted to see my kids as they were in seeing him.

What started as a five kilometre drive ended up as five hundred. Was it beauty or beast? I think for the beast in me, Zen is a beauty. Infact the best I know.

The middle seat

The middle seat...

I hate middle seats.
I know many do that. That's why I got an aisle booked specifically while flying to Delhi for the important meeting at IMA HQ. The rates were bit high for the Saturday noon flight. Yet I insisted on flying this as it was second Saturday, a local holiday and many patients book consultation much in advance. I wanted to see atleast few before flying off. Some colleagues went the previous day as the meet was to begin at noon. My plan was to join by early evening. The non stop flight at 12.30 would take just three hours to reach. I was sure I'd be on time for my presentation.

I'm never an early bird. Often I dash to the airport at the last minute and scrape through the closing boarding gates. Each time I vow to avoid the last minute butterflies, but the same drama keeps unfolding. However, this time I was determined . Appointments were restricted so that I could start at 11 and reach the airport an hour before the flight.

Everything was going on perfect until my phone beeped at quarter to 11. I glanced at the message from the airline. It said that the flight was delayed by half hour. I got a bit perturbed and reassessed the time lines. Maybe, I'll reach by four, an hour to the HQ, still I should be there before the meeting close, I hoped. I saw the rest at relative leisure and got out at 1130.

Reaching the airport on time was rare for me and I approached the counter with some pride. Phew.... The bubble of joy suddenly burst. The flight, I was told, was further delayed "due to delayed arrival of incoming flight from Chennai, because of poor visibility". What on earth was that?? Was that the pilot couldn't see the run way or did he miss seeing the aircraft. 'Fog in Chennai, that too at noon' - was beyond my comprehension. Whatever be the case I'd little choice but to wait. The time lines were narrowing and I didn't want to compute again. I just hoped against hope that I'll reach on time before the meeting end.

I grabbed my boarding card and grimly walked to the lounge. There was plenty of time left and I thought of catching up with FB and WhatsApp. Suddenly the announcement by the airline who keep maintaining that - 'samay per rehna mahatwapoorn he' came. The flight was delayed further and the passengers were asked to collect food packets. Many seemed happy and were rushing for food like flood victims gathering beneath rescue chopper. Was it attraction to food or free food, I wondered. They were all happily returning with packets in hand. I was absolutely dejected. By now it was almost certain that by the time I reach the meeting would be over. I'd to fly back the next morning and going to Delhi just for dinner seemed absurd. I was getting hungry too. Amma had packed my diet lunch. Still I reluctantly walked to their food counter when the crowd thinned out, to find what they were offering. Lays chips, biscuits, cashew nuts and water was the 'precious food' they were giving off. Absolute junk! I took the nuts and returned the rest, though protocol demanded that I recieve all the junk. I was already frustrated on the flight getting delayed and was in no mood to swallow the filth.

I settled back on my couch in the lounge and ate my packed lunch. There wasn't much to do. I'd carried some reading materials and was just hoping to read them in the comfort of my aisle seat. The travel agent knew my weakness and was very proud that she could manage one in second row itself. 2C was my seat. Boarding was announced in a little while. Maybe visibility improved in Chennai and they found the aircraft, right on time to ensure that I miss the meeting. I hoped to have some  discussions at dinner and send message to the President. Boarding announcements too attract immediate crowd. They rush to probably get enough space to store their 'saaman in the over head compartment'.  Personally I prefer to board last when the queue would vanish and one can walk straight into the aircraft. I grabbed my stuff and slowly walked to the plane with drooped shoulders. 'Wasted afternoon', I was sure. I really felt very sad.

Once inside the plane, I didn't have to walk much. 2C, my only good thing on the day would be at the front end itself.
Hey, is it 2c! I checked my boarding card again. Yes, it's printed 2C. But someone else was sitting there, a young mother. She was busy playing with her kids on the adjacent seats and hardly noticed me. I cleared my throat and she looked up. "Oh, is this your seat", she asked. I was relieved. It's just a mistake, I thought. She was sitting on the wrong seat and I'll soon get my 2C back. "Yes", I showed my boarding card. "Can you please exchange with mine" ,she pointed to her middle seat in the next row. She wanted to be next to her kids. I looked around. The guy on the other aisle seemed to be staring at another planet. No other aisle was available. I told her that I'd specifically booked the aisle seat paying Corporate rates. Actually I don't know what that means. That's what the travel agent told me. How can I compromise my corporate rate aisle. The lady got a bit disappointed. She told she'll shift to her middle seat if I insisted. I didn't know what to do. Saints like Buddha, Jesus and Gandhi had shown that 'Sacrifice is the path to ultimate bliss'. But I'm no Saint. How could I sacrifice my precious aisle, that too on such a long flight.

I knew what I'd do. I can't refuse, somehow I can't. So even though I wanted the aisle, I reluctantly gave up. Dejectedly I got into the middle seat she pointed. The aisle guy came back to planet Earth. He offered to help me with my bag probably out of guilt. I refused to accept. I was furious. Why me, he too could have shifted. Not a good day, I was sure as  I reclined to my hated middle seat. I was tired and sad and dozed off in the comfort of my neck rest.

Sometime later I was woken up by giggles. The mom and kids were playing. Infact they continued to play through out the three hour flight. I was reminded of my kids. How much I enjoyed playing with them when they were this age. How I relished travelling and sleeping with them. I took out my mobile and clicked few pictures. I felt light and happy at heart that I didn't insist on my aisle seat. I was happy to see them enjoy.

We landed at Delhi, right on time for my meeting to get over. My brother in law was at the airport and drove me straight to the headquarters. I walked into the President's cabin where he was holding informal talks with other important leaders. He, an ardent patron of the student wing which I head, was bit annoyed that I was late but offered an exclusive discussion on my wing over dinner. I got the office work done and was thrilled as the entire dinner session was devoted for student affairs and I got three hours flat rather than the fifteen minutes which I'd have otherwise had during the meeting. What a turn around! Many important decisions were made and to my absolute delight the President was very generous and gave sanction for lot of student programmes. The dinner was sumptuous too.

As I got into the cab heading to my sister's home to spend the night before I catch my early morning return flight, I counted that I've had one of the best deliberations ever at HQ. Was it the after effect of my little Sacrifice. I don't know. Apart from the immediate bliss maybe sacrifice brings in ultimate gains too. As I reclined off to sleep, the giggling kids and mom came to my mind. Happiness is certainly more worth than an Aisle seat. If occupying a middle seat could make someone else happy, isn't it worth.

The saints are probably right.

18.35 IST

18.35 IST

6.35, my foot!
I knew exactly how these private buses operate and this man certainly can't fool me. The guy while pretending to be a pilot should have realised that though he too was flying, he better stay grounded.

It was my son's birthday and I decided to take a day off to be with him at Pala. The first phase of the journey was on rail, my favourite mode, but alas it got interrupted a bit too early. I had to alight at Thiruvalla instead of Kottayam as there was some work going on and I had to hurry to reach him before his evening prep start at 6. I took an auto from Thiruvalla to Changanechery with the generous driver himself buying me a prepaid ticket from the indifferent (to me) lady at the counter who wrote 20 on it. Did he wink at her? Anyway I was happy and bit astonished too. I didn't know you could travel in an auto from Thiruvalla to Changanechery at Rs 20 until we reached there when the polite and friendly driver demanded 200. He said 20 was for one km and we'd traversed 10. He certainly winked, I was convinced. I had little choice but to pay, yet was impressed by his smartness. Though he reiterated my doubt on my common sense, the price wasn't too high.

Actually he was the one who suggested me to board a private bus to Pala and brought me to Changanechery stand. My mood wasn't great and obviously wasn't impressed too much when the bus driver told that it would take off at 4 40 and land at Pala at 6 35. 6.35!! I'd have believed 6 30 or 6 45 but not 6 35, that too in India, coming from a private bus driver. Yet another attempt to mock at me. Believing him would have been too much for my vanity.
Still there was a surprise. The bus took off at 440 and I was sure my misery was starting. I managed a comfy window seat with good access to railings as I was very much aware that one may be thrown out anytime from a private bus as it negotiates the curves and blatantly overtake fellow buses and the crew would bother the least. People started pouring in and the crowd gradually swelled. Though many ladies were standing, none bothered to share my seat probably to keep the Mallu tradition intact. But soon a harsh laborer asked me to remove my bag and squeezed me to a side. I was prepared for the worst. I knew this journey would be sheer misery.

With the bus moving there was a gush of wind across my face and I did enjoy the refreshing air. Splendid churches with beautiful domes started appearing and I started glancing at the sights from the window. Was I begining to enjoy the ride, I wondered.

"Karukachal", screamed the conductor as the bus came to a screeching halt about 15 minutes after we started. I was begining to grow optimistic as we'd covered quite a distance in the short time and genuinely felt we might reach before time in this 47km drive. But alas, these guys had their delaying tactics. The bus stopped and the conductor announced a ten minute break. Of course, it had to be, how can we work for more than 15 minutes at a stretch! The humidity and temperature inside did make the break horrible. I was getting late too. But then, there was hardly any choice. I'd already committed to the agony. Army had taught me to make the best in any adversity. It suddenly happened to me that I'll use the opportunity to connect with friends. Many of them while living abroad had a heart of Indian steel and was missing the nation each minute. What else could be more exciting than tempting them further on homeland. Believe me, there was 3G uninterrupted (I'm yet to get a 4G phone) as I merrily switched on whataspp and updated status as 'Elated- the green and serene Kerala. Sheer bliss'. Some curious friends joined. Hey, what's it? I'm in a bus through the green heavens in Kottayam, I responded.

The bus had started from Karukachal, and I was excited responding to the curious mates abroad, clicking the best scenes from the window and careful to avoid the misery around. They were growing jealous which made me more ecstatic. The guy sitting next was staring at my phone but probably all he could gather was that the phone was laughing, smiling and even hugging at times. I was confident that if he had to understand the conversations I had to teach him English first and so kept narrating incidents true and otherwise to my friends on whataspp. I was clicking pictures frequently and posting them. The huts, the mansions, traditional houses, landscape, hills, trees, streams...well there was almost everything to send.
Small yet beautiful temples, sparsely crowded suburbs, a village gathering around a kolaambi (horn) mike playing old songs all added to the vivid scenes on the way. One junction gave out a splendid aroma of beef fry and I would have forgotten my diet vow had I not been in a hurry. There was also a kallu (toddy) shop, against an inviting backdrop of the country side with dipping Sun, which would have been tempting to those who relished it, but certainly that's not my cup of drink. The drive was really smooth. I had expected bad roads and huge potholes but not only was there few of these most of the roads were infact too good. That's little wonder given that there was three ministers in close neighbourhood not long time back. There was a drizzle and the wind was really cool.
I was by now enjoying every bit of the trip and naturally got lost in time and space. Hey, what brings you here, asked a friend and I suddenly realised I had a purpose. I looked into my watch. It showed 6.33. We were probably traversing some town. I looked around. There were hardly few people now.
Oh, how far is Pala, I asked the conductor. I knew that we wouldn't be anywhere near and frankly by now I may have relished drive for another half hour or so.
"Two more minutes sir", he replied.
My goodness! is this true?
6.35pm and we entered Pala bus stand. My annoyance at the crew became appreciation as I watched with reverence, the pious driver switch off the engine and alight for a well deserving rest.
Did anyone think that IST was Indian stretchable time? Well, not any more.
The nation is on fast track and punctuality do matter. Rural India too, I'm convinced after the enchanting trip, would never be found wanting.
